CHILIS Fall Conference 2006

Deb Hoadley, Chair, gave us a sneak preview of Julie Brillhart's whimsical, watercolor artwork for the 2007 Summer Reading Program "Reading Road Trip USA".
Changing of the guard: (L to R) Outgoing treasurer Gail Drucker; incoming president Pam Stauffacher; outgoing president Luci Albertson; incoming secretary Maureen Graham; outgoing newsletter editor and incoming treasurer Nancy Lang; outgoing secretary Rachel Stolworthy; incoming vice president Marie Lajeune.
After ten years of service to the newsletter, Nancy Lang now takes over as our treasurer. Outgoing president Luci Albertson turns over the reins to Pam Stauffacher.
The indefatigable Gail Drucker sells raffle tickets for some terrific prizes.
Lots of fabulous books, puppets, puzzles, and other fun merchandise to peruse. Fred Reidy's wonderful puppets included a Christmas tree complete with ornaments (top of photo at right).
Signing with Babies: Mary Buckley of Signs & Smiles offered insight into the rationale and technique for teaching babies to sign. Here Mary signs 'butterfly' to Eric Carle's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar". Babies are ready to start learning signs between 6-9 months of age! "Learning to sign can:
  • Enhance language skills
  • Reduce frustration for parents and babies
  • Empower babies to communicate early in life
  • Provide a window into your child's mind"
Baby Yoga with Sherry Gardner demonstrating some 'scintillating' yoga moves that are easy to do with children. Open and close your fingers as you move hands up, down, and all around (simulating stars) to accompany "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star".
Enjoying the warm sun during lunch break outside our conference site. Conference host, the Ingalls Memorial Library, Rindge, built in 1894.
What charming reading rooms await inside this beautiful library! Well worth the short walk down the hill from the meeting house.
Candlemaking, crafts, climbing, cooking, road kill; Bill Tetreault, Library Media Specialist from Memorial Middle School is passionate about them all! Bill advises, "If you have a passion- share it with kids!"

Have you ever had pear pie?Yummy! We got to sample some of 'Wild' Bill's delicious homemade pies after his "Activities with Non-Fiction to Hook Non-Readers".
Customer Service for Teens: Ellen Snoeyenbos from Duxbury Free Library, MA reminded us that teens typically make up 25% of our library population- yet what percentage is spent on them?

Make your library a safe, reliable, welcoming place where teens can hang out and "just be".

Emphasize things kids CAN do at the library: Read, study, do homework, play games, etc.

... another fun and wonder-fall CHILIS conference!
