Learning About Life in Afghanistan: Programs for Adults & Children

Rachel Lehr -- artist, scholar and founder of Rubia, the Afghan women's handwork project -- is available through April to present library programs for adults and children throughout New Hampshire. Rachel comes to libraries, schools, and community centers with beautiful photographs, video, and an Afghan Culture Trunk, filled with household artifacts from Afghanistan including clothing, books, money, utensils, pictures, and crafts, that help listeners think about how life is the same -- and different -- halfway around the world.

She focuses in particular on the lives of women and children, speaking with intimate knowledge gained from living with rural families as she works on her nonprofit project to educate and employ Afghan women.

Please call or email Frumie Selchen of the Arts Alliance of Northern New Hampshire (323-7302, info@aannh.org) for further information or to book a program.

Attention New Hampshire Libraries: CLiF (Children's Literacy Foundation) grant

If your library is located in a community of fewer than 5,000 people, please consider applying for this grant. CLIF is eager to receive applications from NH libraries; in recent grant rounds, more Vermont libraries have applied for this terrific grant. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact CLIF or me.

Ann Hoey

CLiF announces that it is taking applications for its Rural Library Program.

Twelve libraries in Vermont and New Hampshire will be awarded sponsorships this August!

The Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to nurturing a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont. In particular, CLiF's programs target children in rural communities, and children who are at high risk of growing up functionally illiterate.

In one of our most successful programs, CLiF provides sponsorships for the purchase of books for children up to age 12 for public libraries in towns with populations under 5,000. CLiF has already awarded more than 162 sponsorships for rural public libraries in New Hampshire and Vermont – about 50% of the eligible libraries! The deadline to apply for the fall round of the CLiF Library Sponsorship is August 1st.

If you are interested in learning more about this sponsorship please visit us on the web at http://www.clifonline.org/ Click on 'Program' and then "Rural Public Library." The New Hampshire Pants are Traveling to Libraries Around the State

January 2007 marked the release of the fourth book in the very popular teen series, "Forever in Blue: The Fourth Summer of the Sisterhood" by Ann Brashares!

Wendy Rowe of Barrington Public Library and Tim Shaheen of Derry Public Library have coordinated two pairs of state-wide traveling pants that are now being sent by van to participating libraries. Each library will keep the pants for one week, sign and embellish them, take photos for the scrapbook, and send them on to the next library. "Guidelines" are attached (as the girls do in the books). Once the pants have circulated, the scrapbook full of pictures and the notebook of programming events will be sent back around so everyone can see the finished product!

Update from Tim: I have completed an Excel spreadsheet schedule for the NH Traveling Pants. Because over 40 libraries have signed up, we decided to send out three pairs of jeans across the state in order for everyone to have access to them by the end of June.

Wendy Rowe of Barrington has donated one scrapbook for the project (Thanks Wendy!). We need two more scrapbooks (12X12 size plus refills) and three notebooks for the project. Please contact me if you have any of these items to donate to the project. Any donations will be greatly appreciated.

Mary Cronin of the Madison Library has created a blog for the NH Traveling Pants at http://nhtravelingpants.blogspot.com. Check it out for the latest info on the project. Post any comments and photos regarding the project at this blog. Thanks to Mary for taking the time to create and maintain this blog.

I hope everyone has fun with this project. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions/comments.

Tim Sheehan, Reference/YA Librarian, Derry Public Library, 64 East Broadway, Derry NH 03038-2414, 603-432-6140 tims@derry.lib.nh.us

In addition to voting for a slate of officers and by-laws changes, members had the opportunity to learn about some wonderful programming enhancements, purchase Great Stone Face and Ladybug materials, take a chance on raffle items, talk with children's librarians from around the state, sample some of Wild Bill's pear pie, view the lovely Ingall's library, and see the latest Fred Reidy puppets- including his new Christmas tree! A good time was had by all, and the Rindge Meeting House was a delightful setting. A warm thank-you to all the folks who helped make it a success!
