If you do send your evaluation by the deadline, you will be entered into a raffle to be held at the CHILIS conference in October. This year, we are no longer collecting samples of newspaper articles, flyers, etc. If you haven't sent me your evaluation yet, please do not send any extra items when you do. if you already sent me stuff with your evaluation, I will have it at the CHILIS conference in case you want it back. After the conference I will circular file anything I still have unless you request it back.

Children's Book Review

You are invited to attend a Children's Book Review, which will be held at the N.H. State Library in Concord from Monday, September 17th through Friday, September 21st from 8a.m. to 4p.m. in the Map Gallery on the second floor. Please come and preview new children's and teen's fiction and non-fiction titles. About 300 titles - most with reviews from major review publications - will be on display. You may come anytime that is convenient for you; there is no need to schedule a visit. All of these books are catalogued in NHU-PAC. Librarians may choose three to four books, which will be sent via van following the end of the Review. For more information, please contact me. We can no longer mail books.

If you would like to preview the list of titles that will be on display, you can find this information in NHU-PAC. On NHU-PAC's homepage, choose the gray Librarians Tools tab. Then, select the last purple tab called Children's Book Review. You can then click on the link that corresponds to the list you wish to see.

The holidays are coming, and CHILIS has three Accucut machines available for members to use!

They are presently housed at the following libraries: Bedford Public, Franklin Public and Weeks Memorial Library in Lancaster. Librarians who wish to use the machines should make arrangements with the particular library and bring their own paper for cutting. If you'd like to see what these machines and die cuts look like, you can visit the Accucut website at http://www.accucut.com/

The CHILIS Book Discussion Co-op continues to add new titles to its collection.

The Children's Literacy Foundation (CLiF) is a non-profit organization whose mission is to "nurture a love of reading and writing among children throughout New Hampshire and Vermont."

We would like to encourage your library to apply for a CLiF Rural Library Sponsorship. CLiF awards Library Sponsorships to rural public libraries that serve towns of fewer than 5,000 people. CLiF has already sponsored more than half of all the rural public libraries in New Hampshire and Vermont, and we award 12 new sponsorships every August and February.

Each sponsored library receives $2,000 in new, high-quality hardcover children's books for children up to age 12. (Towns are asked to raise $300 in matching funds). Libraries that are awarded a CLiF Sponsorship receive our CLiF Booklist that includes more than 700 books -- classics, Caldecott and Newbury award winners, recent books, and a wide selection of books by local authors and illustrators. After a librarian selects books, CLiF takes care of ordering, purchasing, and processing. (See the CLiF Booklist at http://www.clifonline.org/book_intro.html

A CLiF representative travels to each sponsored town, delivers the books in person, and gives an entertaining presentation to the town's children about the joys of words, books, reading and writing. We commonly have every child in town from Kindergarten to Grade 6 attend these special storytelling and book delivery celebrations.

CONFERENCES

CHILIS Fall Conference - Save the date: Thursday, October 18, 2007!

The CHILIS Fall Conference, co-sponsored by the Portsmouth PL, will be held on Thursday, October 18 from 9:00 to 3:30 at the new Portsmouth Public Library. Come and learn about dealing with special needs children during storytime, marketing your library collection, and drawing teens in with technology.

Fred Reidy will be there with his puppets for sale, Ladybug stickers will be sold, Great Stone Face items will be available, raffle tickets and the new Flume Award poster will be available for purchase.
