NEWS YOU CAN USE

An Invitation to the Kids at Your Library to Share What They Like Best About Australia

Through the libraries' "G'Day for Reading" summer program, you've had a chance to read and learn about Australia, a fascinating country with a wide variety of places to see and things to do. Your Invitation: To make a storyboard on what you like best in Australia.

Based on what you've learned this summer, what one thing you would really like to do if you traveled to Australia? Is there a special place you've read about that you would like to visit? Or something different you'd like to eat? Or an activity you would really like to try? Include a short narrative and your own drawings or pictures you find.

Your Entry: Your storyboard must have at least two panels and no more than 10. Be sure to include your name, age, address, telephone number, email address, and the name of your library. Mail your entry, no later than September 15, 2008 to:

Jeanne Crouse
Great Escape Travel Services
108 Geneva Point Road, Unit 2
Moultonborough, NH 03254

Prizes: Grand Prize: a weekend of your choice in 2009 with your family (up to 4 people including at least one adult) in a Lakeview Cabin at Geneva Point Center in Moultonborough to have fun on Lake Winni and explore the nature trails.

Second Prize: a $100 savings bond from Meredith Village Savings Bank.

Third Prize: a custom “G' Day for Reading” quilted wall-hanging, with fabric from Australia's Outback, designed and created by Linda Monasky of the Bear Paw Gallery in Alton, NH.

Each winner's library will receive a copy of Images of Queensland, Frasier Island.

Judging: Entries will be judged according to age groups: a) age 8 and under, b) ages 9-11, c) ages 12-15. Winning entrants will be notified by October 6, 2008. The 3-person judges' panel will choose one grand prize winner and one second prize winner. Three third prize winners from each age group will also be selected. Entries that make the judges want to jump on an airplane and head off to experience Australia are sure to score highly.

All winners will be invited to attend an award reception at the Geneva Point Center. Winning entries will be displayed at Geneva Point Center so everyone can come on over to see the best of Australia.

Rules: Only one entry per child; entrants must be 15 years of age or younger. Enrollment in the “G' Day for Reading” program at your local library is not mandatory. Summer residents should indicate their contact information in the fall and the New Hampshire library where they enjoyed the summer. Please direct any questions to: Oz@geTraveller.com

Entries cannot be returned and may be used in future displays, publications and/or internet promotions.

Sponsored by: The Bear Paw Gallery, Geneva Point Center, Great Escape Travel Services, and Meredith Village Savings Bank.

EXPLORE: NASA Web casts

Children's and youth librarians in New Hampshire are invited to participate in free NASA Web casts designed especially for them. These Web casts are part of the Explore! program (www.lpi.usra.edu/explore), which has developed children's program materials and trained librarians in 16 states in the last 5 years in collaboration with state libraries. The Web cast content has been designed specifically for libraries and includes demonstrations of hands-on activities for children's programs, sharing of supporting resources, and interaction with NASA scientists.

If you have any questions, or would like additional information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I would be happy to provide contact information with the states that have participated in Explore! programs.

Free Parent-Child Early Literacy Materials

We have just posted a new set of free parent-child early literacy materials, titled "On the Go", designed to encourage parents to interact with their children to facilitate language, early literacy, and positive parent-child interactions. These materials include 14 activities designed to be used outside the home: in the car, while walking, during bus rides, etc. The activities encourage early language and literacy development from birth through preschool. They are appropriate for children with disabilities as well as children who are developing typically. Development of these materials was supported by Grant H324M020084 from the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

Free reproducible language and early literacy activities, developed by Angela Notari-Syverson, Ph.D. and colleagues, are available. To download materials go to www.walearning.com and click on the purple button that says "Free Parent Education Handouts" on the home page. Look for the "On the Go" file to download the materials in PDF format.

Grant Opportunity: Covey Foundation:

The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. is a charitable institute whose purpose is to assist organizations in their efforts to provide books to children who might otherwise lack access to children's literature.

Lois Lenski, the 1946 Newbery medalist for Strawberry Girl, had a life-long concern that good books be available to all children. In pursuit of this goal, she established a foundation to provide grants to public libraries, school libraries, and non-profit agencies serving disadvantaged populations. The Lois Lenski Covey Foundation, Inc. annually awards grants to rural and urban, public and school libraries serving at-risk children.

The Foundation gives priority to applications from libraries and agencies with real need and limited book budgets. Funds are earmarked for purchasing books for young people, and are not intended for administrative or operational use. Previously awarded grants have ranged from $500 to $3000. Successful applicants have proposed purchases to update their children's book collections generally or to expand their holdings in specific areas.

To qualify for year 2008 grants, completed application forms must be received at the address indicated on the application no later than 15 September 2008. Grants will be awarded on 15 December 2008. We are unable to respond to queries about the status of the application until after the awards date. For more information and to download an application form, visit http://www.loislenskicovey.org/index.html
