The life of orphan Pug changes forever when he is kidnapped from his home to be a slave. When master magician Kuglan finds Pug has magical abilities, he is taken in as an apprentice to become a great magician himself. Pug’s friend, Tomas, is also suddenly blessed with magical abilities when he is given a suit of armor by a dying dragon, turning Tomas into a warrior. Meanwhile, a rift is opened in the fabric of space and time between Pug’s world of Midkemia and the other world Kelewan, from where evil beings begin to come. As Pug gets used to his new magic powers, a war between Order and Chaos begins in which Pug and Thomas will play a crucial role.

Readers identify with Pug and Tomas of the Riftwar saga because the boys did not always have strong magical powers — they were suddenly blessed with these abilities and had to learn how to deal with them. Many fantasy readers dream of being given magic powers themselves. The space-time rift between the two worlds also adds a unique element to the series, and the action of battle keeps the pages turning.

“Fantasy . . . can offer dreams, the fulfillment of wishes, and escape.”
