                ENDANGERED SPECIES-BY-COUNTY LIST

                            DISCLAIMER

THE FOLLOWING LIST IDENTIFIES FEDERALLY LISTED OR PROPOSED U.S.
SPECIES BY STATE AND COUNTY. IT HAS BEEN UPDATED THROUGH AUGUST 31,
1997.  WHALES AND OTHER OCEANIC SPECIES ARE NOT COVERED BY THIS
LIST.  SEA TURTLES, ESTUARINE, AND ANADROMOUS SPECIES ARE INCLUDED,
BUT MAY BE CLASSIFIED AS "KNOWN" OR "POSSIBLE" IN SOME COUNTIES,
EVEN IF THEY ARE ONLY KNOWN OFF-SHORE.  SPECIES LISTED FOR REASONS
OF "SIMILARITY OF APPEARANCE" ARE ALSO NOT INCLUDED IN THIS LIST.

SPECIES LOCALITY INFORMATION WAS VERIFIED BY THE FISH AND WILDLIFE
SERVICE (FWS) THROUGH DECEMBER 9, 1994.  LOCALITY INFORMATION FOR
SPECIES LISTED SINCE DECEMBER 9, 1994 HAS NOT BEEN VERIFIED BY FWS.
IN ORDER TO DETERMINE WHICH SPECIES HAVE BEEN VERIFIED WITH FWS,
REFER TO THE NUMBERS IN THE "WHEN LISTED" COLUMN OF THE OFFICIAL
FWS PUBLICATION, ENDANGERED AND THREATENED WILDLIFE AND PLANTS, 50
CFR 17.11 & 17.12, WHICH IS UPDATED BY FWS PERIODICALLY.  THE
LATEST PRINTED VERSION DATED OCTOBER 31, 1996, MAY BE OBTAINED BY
CALLING THE FWS PUBLICATIONS OFFICE AT 703-358-1711, IN ARLINGTON,
VIRGINIA.  UPDATES ARE PERIODICALLY POSTED ON THE FWS WEB SITE.
SPECIES LISTED PRIOR TO REFERENCE #567 IN THAT PUBLICATION HAVE
BEEN VERIFIED; THOSE LISTED BEGINNING WITH #567 HAVE NOT.

WHILE THE LIST PROVIDES A REASONABLY ACCURATE GUIDE, IT SHOULD NOT
BE CONSIDERED THE FINAL WORD IN DETERMINING SPECIES LOCATIONS.
ALTHOUGH IT PRESENTS OUR BEST CURRENT INFORMATION AVAILABLE, NEW
SPECIES ARE REGULARLY BEING LISTED.  FOR THOSE SPECIES ALREADY
LISTED, COMPILING NEW SPECIES HABITAT INFORMATION IS A CONTINUING
PROCESS.  SPECIES POPULATIONS ARE OFTEN DYNAMIC AND, SUBSEQUENT TO
LISTING, MAY BE DISCOVERED IN NEW LOCATIONS.  MOREOVER, TRUE TO
THEIR ENDANGERED OR THREATENED STATUS, THEY MAY BE EXTIRPATED FROM
PREVIOUSLY OCCUPIED LOCATIONS.

THE OFFICE OF PESTICIDE PROGRAMS WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR LISTING
PROPOSALS AND RULE-MAKING NOTICES IN THE FEDERAL REGISTER AND MAKE
OTHER CHANGES AS NEW INFORMATION BECOMES AVAILABLE.  THE LIST WILL
BE PERIODICALLY REPRINTED AND UPDATED ON OPP'S WEB SITE.
                            EXPLANATION

There are two categories under the "CERTAINTY OF OCCURRENCE" column
for each county: Known and Possible.  Species were assigned to
these categories based on information from the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service (FWS) Regions.  While the categories provide a
general guide, there is wide latitude in their interpretation as
relates to currently occupied habitat.

The term "known" is the more definitive of the two, and simply
means that the species is known or was recently known to occur in
the county identified.  However, for migratory species, the known
occurrence may be only at certain times of the year.  Further, a
species may have been known to occupy an area in the recent past,
but the survey information or sighting records may be several years
out of date.

The term "possible" has a broad definition, ranging from
"conceivable" to "likely".  It could mean there is appropriate
habitat in the county for the species and this habitat is within
the current range of the species, even if the species has not been
recorded there.  Counties within a migratory flyway often include
possible sightings for species which may fly over a county, but
which may or may not stop in that county.  In some cases, such a
sighting may be categorized as "known"  Although EPA makes every
possible effort to eliminate solely historic records, some historic
sightings have been included in this category if it is expected
that with a diligent survey, the species could be located.

For the following listed species, The Office of Pesticide Programs
believes the term "possible" was used as a matter of convenience in
the broadest possible context, probably because of insufficient
information.  This generally relates to wide-ranging animals that
often are difficult to locate.  They are:

American peregrine falcon                Black-footed ferret
Northern aplomado falcon                 Indiana bat
Wood stork                               Gray bat           
Eastern indigo snake                     all sea turtles


In addition, the FWS indicates the following species are believed
to be extinct or extirpated in the U.S. but they have not yet been
formally delisted (FWS/OES HQ verbal communication 1/93):

Guam broadbill                 Scioto madtom
